We wanted to offer both stability and openness, so decided for Android. Android is also more appealing for the second-hand market. This means an extension of the usable life of the phone.
Next to that, we wanted a system that supports dual SIM. Dual SIM can reduce the amount of phones a person might need. You can combine a work and a private SIM card in one phone for example. This means that at the end of life, there is less e-waste.
By default, the OS on the Fairphone 1 is not the basic Stock Android. We teamed up with the talented people at Kwamecorp to simplify and improve the user experience. They created some special features on top of Android 4.2.
